Vehicle Crime Prevention Advice - Protecting Your Vehicle from Keyless Theft

Following recent reports of vehicle thefts in the local area, we would like to remind residents of some simple steps they can take to help protect their vehicles from being targeted by thieves.

Many modern vehicles use keyless entry and ignition systems, which can be vulnerable to theft if criminals are able to intercept or relay the signal from the key fob.

To help reduce the risk:

• Keep vehicle keys well away from doors, windows, and letterboxes.
• Store keyless entry fobs in a signal-blocking pouch (commonly known as a Faraday pouch) or similar protective container.
• If available, enable any additional security features supplied by the manufacturer, such as immobilisers or motion sensor deactivation.
• Park in a locked garage whenever possible. If this is not available, park in a well-lit area.
• Consider using visible security devices such as steering wheel locks, which can act as a deterrent to offenders.
• Ensure your vehicle is locked and alarmed, even when parked on your driveway.
• Be vigilant for suspicious individuals or vehicles in your neighbourhood, particularly during the hours of darkness.
• Review CCTV and security camera coverage around your property and ensure systems are functioning correctly.

If you witness suspicious activity around vehicles in your area, please report it to Staffordshire Police. In an emergency, or if a crime is in progress, call 999.

By taking a few simple precautions, we can all play a part in making it more difficult for criminals to target vehicles within our communities.
